These are the materials for my Digital Schoolhouse workshop at the Big Bang Fair 2016. The aim was to encourage Key Stage 3 pupils (aged 11-14) to think about Computational Thinking concepts using a practical team-based activity that involved the use of iPads. Specifically I wanted pupils to develop an appreciation of the benefits of decomposing a problem and using pattern recognition to help arrive at a solution.
Note that this was only ever intended as a basic introduction and the activities presented were never meant to be overly complex or challenging.
- Session presentation
- Teacher answer sheet
- Treasure hunt worksheet containing codes used by the Klikaklu iPad app to provide clues as to the symbols required to be decoded as part of main activity
- Symbols used as part of the code and printed out for pupils to use with the app to work through the clues (the numbers are given when a pupil solves a clue on the app – eventually they are given the letter to use in the final code)
- Example of pupils’ work in successfully decoding the final message
